Family and Community Medicine Block: (FCM 621: CRH 8)

The Family and Community Medicine Block aims to introduce the student to the health care in the community, in the contexts of general practice, and also of geriatric and rehabilitation medicine. It also aims to equip the student with knowledge, understanding, skills and abilities that are relevant to community-based medical practice.

The practice of medicine in the community offers special challenges. It is impossible to focus on the biomedical processes of disease to the exclusion of the psychosocial aspects of a patient’s illness. Many of the problems with which patient’s present, need to be understood simultaneously in cultural, behavioral and biological terms. Doctors working in the community often develop long-term relationships with patients and their families. The process of care is often concerned more with prevention - primary, secondary and tertiary - than with cure.
