The King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences will be hosting the Innovations in Health Professions Education: An International Health Focused Workshop. The workshop will be presented by Prof. Henk Schmidt and three other visiting faculty; Prof. Susan M. Case, Prof. Robert Parson and Prof. Hossam Hamdy.

Key Objectives

Participants are expected to achieve the following general objectives:

  • Recognize the organizational & curricular structure at KSAU-HS
  • Identify principles of cognition & recognize its influence on learning
  • Recognize principles of effective learning
  • Conduct an effective tutorial and small group teaching/learning session
  • Identify the process of medical expertise development
  • Apply concepts of expertise development & clinical reasoning to promote effective learning
  • Develop session learning objectives
  • Discover the importance of curriculum mapping and alignment
  • Identify methods of integrating research, community medicine and professional development in an undergraduate health profession curriculum
  • Implement strategies for teaching and clinical skills
  • Recognize the principles of effective mentoring and clinical supervision
  • Outline the concepts, principles and benefits of new assessment methods
  • Apply guidelines to develop high quality assessment items
  • Describe the principles of reflective learning and practice
  • Outline the main features of educational quality improvement according to EEC-HS course specification
  • Describe the scope of simulation in medication education
  • Integrate simulation in healthcare education in basic and clinical sciences

Workshop Themes: There are five main themes explored over the five days of the workshop. Interactive sessions and group activities will be conducted to address specific objectives that are aligned with the general objectives of the workshop. Themes for the workshops are:

Day 1: Principles of effective learning

Day 2: Concepts in curriculum development and performance improvement

Day 3: Clinical skills and supervision

Day 4: Assessment 

Day 5: Simulation based learning
