On behalf of the Organizing and Scientific Committees, it is my pleasure to welcome you to share in the proceedings of this symposium, which will focus on integration of patient safety in undergraduate medical curricula.

The National Guard Health Affairs, inspired by the vision of its senior leaders, and the guidance of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, is committed to providing quality, compassionate care to our patients.  The resoluteness of this commitment is demonstrated by the decision to change the focus of patient safety to the early stages of medical training, in the hope that early exposure to patient safety principles will elevate this issue to the forefront of the Saudi health community, and foster a safety-first mindset in our future health care providers.

The symposium program includes sessions by distinguished international and local experts, who will share their experiences and expertise in this field.  I will take this opportunity to welcome our international guest speakers Professor Bruce Barraclough and Associate Professor Merrilyn Walton, Chairman and Editorial Leader, respectively, for the medical education team for the World Alliance for Patient Safety, and Dr. Shannon Phillips; the first appointed Patient Safety Officer at the Cleveland Clinic in the USA.

In keeping with our mission, the National Guard Health Affairs will continue to keep patient safety first and foremost in patient care.  It is our hope that by opening a dialogue on patient safety, we can create a national awareness that will encourage others to follow our lead in education.

Dr. Bandar Al Knawy
President, King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences
CEO, National Guard Health Affairs

Your current web browser must be updated to version 7 of Internet Explorer (IE7) to take advantage of all of template's capabilities.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
